Long-Tail Keywords: How New Shopify Stores Win Search
New store owners often chase the biggest keyword they can think of — "running shoes", "coffee", "skincare". You will not win those. The brands that already rank have years of authority and thousands of links. But you do not need those terms. You need the long tail.
What long-tail means
Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific phrases with lower search volume and far lower competition:
- "running shoes" — huge volume, impossible for a new store
- "trail running shoes for wide feet" — smaller volume, winnable, and the shopper knows exactly what they want
Lower volume sounds worse. It is not. A specific searcher is closer to buying, and ten specific terms you actually rank for beat one broad term you never will.
How to find them
- Mine your own product attributes: material, fit, use case, audience, occasion. Each combination is a potential long-tail phrase.
- Read the "People also ask" boxes on searches related to your products — those are real questions people type.
- Check your search bar and support inbox — the exact wording customers use is gold.
Turn them into content
Each strong long-tail phrase becomes a blog post or a well-optimized product/collection page. A post titled after the exact question a buyer asks, that actually answers it, is the most reliable way for a small store to earn its first rankings.
Judge difficulty before you commit
Not every long-tail term is easy — some are quietly dominated by big retailers. Look at who already ranks on page one. If it is all marketplaces and major brands, pick a more specific angle.
