Core Web Vitals for Shopify: What Actually Moves Rankings

1 min read

Core Web Vitals get treated as either a magic ranking lever or a pointless distraction. The truth is in between: they are a real, if modest, ranking signal — and more importantly, they affect whether shoppers stick around long enough to buy.

The three metrics

How much it matters for Shopify

On Shopify, your theme and apps drive most of your Core Web Vitals, and the platform handles a lot of the hard parts. So the ceiling on what you can change is lower than on a custom site — but the fixes that exist are worth doing, because slow mobile pages quietly lose both rankings and sales.

The fixes worth your time

  1. Compress and size images. Oversized product photos are the number-one LCP problem. Serve appropriately sized, modern-format images.
  2. Cut unused apps. Every app injects scripts. Remove ones you no longer use — they tax every page.
  3. Set image dimensions. Images without reserved space cause layout shift. A good theme handles this; a heavily customized one may not.
  4. Lazy-load below the fold. Load what the shopper sees first; defer the rest.

Do not over-index on the score

A perfect score with weak content still will not rank. Speed is a tie-breaker, not a substitute for relevance. Fix the obvious problems, then put your energy into content and on-page SEO.

The shortcut

SEO Bison's store audit measures your PageSpeed metrics alongside the rest of your on-page SEO, so you can see whether speed is actually holding you back — or whether your time is better spent elsewhere.
